Bhushan Gagrani, the bureaucrat managing Mumbai’s long-overdue revamp, expects to spend $25 billion on upgrades over the next five years. The city is undergoing a massive transformation with several projects aimed at improving connectivity, reducing travel time, and driving economic growth. Gagrani is helping the city shed its underdog reputation and ascend to the same level of corporate respectability as Hong Kong or Tokyo.
The Versova-Bandra Sea Link is one of the major projects designed to enhance connectivity and reduce travel time in the city. A new international airport is also being built to alleviate congestion at the existing airport and drive regional economic growth. Additionally, the city’s metro lines are being expanded to improve public transportation and reduce traffic congestion.
“We are trying to catch up at almost breakneck speed,” said Gagrani. “All these major projects are likely to be completed within the next two to three years.”
The city’s transformation is expected to drive economic growth, improve livability, and increase its global competitiveness. With a growing population of over 20 million people, Mumbai’s infrastructure development is crucial to supporting its emergence as a major financial hub.
