In a nod to the legacy of renowned Indian architect Balkrishna V Doshi, Sangath studio has designed a modernist toilet block at the Institute of Indology in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The new facility, led by architects Khushnu Panthaki Hoof and Sönke Hoof, is a subtle yet functional addition to Doshi’s 1959 landmark building.
The curved, raw concrete structure is linked to the existing building via a small bridge, echoing the original materiality while considering proportion and scale. The design prioritizes functionality, accessibility, and seamlessness, creating a contemporary yet refined space.
This innovative toilet block addresses the institution’s growing needs while respecting the legacy of the original building. As Panthaki Hoof notes, “Maybe I should call it ‘Not just a toilet block’.”
