A former garage in Manhattan has been transformed into a state-of-the-art pet adoption center by New York-based Studio Joseph. The Animal Care Centers of New York Pet Adoption Center, located on 109th Street, features a thoughtfully designed space that prioritizes the health and well-being of both animals and humans.
According to Wendy Evans Joseph, principal of Studio Joseph, the nearly century-old garage was in disrepair, with a damaged wood roof structure and cracked concrete-slab floor. However, the existing square footage was sufficient for the ACC’s needs, and the organization wanted to maintain a positive relationship with the community.
Studio Joseph’s design retained as much of the original structure as possible, bracing the original wood beams and working within the building’s brick envelope. The two garage doors were transformed into glass-fronted entryways, and the adjacent doors became windows for the dog and cat meet-and-greet rooms.
The center’s design incorporates natural light, creating a more pleasant environment for both humans and animals. “Bringing daylight into both the lobby and the kennel area gives the animals a sense of night and day,” says Wendy Evans Joseph. “It’s very healthy for them and lends them a calmer spirit.”
