Recent photos released by ZHA on social media and its website show the construction of Central Bank of Iraq HQ near the finishing line, with the 170-metre tall tapered and twisting tower completed.
The building is located on the banks of the Tigris River in Baghdad and holds a covered area of 90,000 square metres. It stands on a large concrete podium with an exoskeleton that gradually tapers as it rises, its layered and rippling facade giving shade to the double glazing and meant to recreate the effect of dappled light reflecting off the nearby river.
According to the studio, the buildingโs design conveys core values of the national institution โ resilience, stability and sustainability. The project was officially signed off in 2012 and has been designed by the late British-Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid herself.
Though not yet complete, Central Bank headquarters is now the tallest building in Baghdad. The formwork has been completed by Doka Turkey in conjunction with Daax Construction. Engineers working on the project have described it as one of the most sophisticated and challenging projects in the world due to the omnidirectional nature of the project.
