Mumbai, known for its colonial-era buildings, will soon have more unique structures as the government has introduced a special policy to encourage their development, enhance the city’s aesthetic appeal, and boost tourism.
“Mumbai’s architectural heritage has long been defined by its iconic structures from the British era. To preserve this legacy and encourage the development of distinctive, landmark buildings, the Maharashtra government has introduced a special policy,” said Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Minister.
Shinde emphasized that globally, cities are recognized for their distinct urban planning, vibrant neighborhoods, and iconic landmarks. Mumbai, being a world-class city, deserves to promote landmark buildings that will not only beautify the city but also enhance its appeal as a global tourist destination.
Currently, the Development Control and Promotion Regulations impose certain limitations on the construction of distinctive structures. To address this, the government has proposed amendments under Section 37(1) of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, allowing special provisions for the development of iconic buildings.
