The annual Golden Hammer awards, presented by Historic Richmond and Storefront for Community Design, recognized outstanding real estate projects in the region. Thirteen awards were given to 34 nominees at a ceremony held at Hardywood Richmond. Top honorees included Hotel Petersburg, which won Best Restoration, and the Seaboard Air Line Railroad Depot, which won Best Adaptive Reuse/Rehabilitation.
Hotel Petersburg’s $14 million restoration involved multiple partners, including The Yellow Room, Covington Design Group, and Retro Hospitality. The Seaboard Air Line Railroad Depot’s renovation, costing over $1 million, was completed by developers Doug Albertson and Palmer Wilkins, with assistance from architects Michael Pellis and Ratio. Other winners included Highland Terrace Apartments (Best New Construction), 3006 First Ave. (Best ResidentialโSmall Scale), and the James River Association’s James A. Buzzard River Education Center (Best Placemaking and Urban Design).
The Valentine Museum’s Valentine Studio won Best PlacemakingโArts + Culture. Additional winners were recognized for their contributions to the region’s revitalization. The Golden Hammer awards acknowledge exceptional projects that promote community development, preservation, and design excellence.
