Warwickshire-based HB Architects has submitted plans for a new Maggie’s Centre at the Royal Liverpool Hospital, backed by the Steve Morgan Foundation. This will be the practice’s third Maggie’s Centre, following completed and ongoing projects in Wirral and Bodelwyddan, North Wales.
The design features traditional brick detailing in a contemporary format and scale, drawing inspiration from nearby Liverpool University and The Sacred Heart Catholic Church. HB Architects is the first practice to have designed three Maggie’s Centres, which provide cancer support services.
Other Maggie’s Centres have been designed by renowned architects, including Norman Foster, Zaha Hadid, and Daniel Libeskind. The Steve Morgan Foundation, led by Redrow founder Steve Morgan, selected HB Architects for the projects and took a lead role in the design and commissioning process.
The foundation’s involvement is an example of “disruptive philanthropy,” enabling the delivery of Maggie’s Centres in a cost-effective manner. The Wirral centre was built at a lower cost than would have been possible without the foundation’s involvement.
