Coop Himmelb(l)au has been appointed to spearhead the architectural design for the new Al Maktoum International Airport in Dubai, UAE. In partnership with Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects (DAEP) and Dar Al-Handasah, the design will showcase cutting-edge structural innovations, energy efficiency, and modern technologies, positioning the airport as a landmark of international importance.
The design focuses on creating expansive, open spaces to ensure a seamless visitor experience. The roof is both a functional element and a striking design feature, embodying Dubaiโs ambitious vision. Integrating technologies like smart navigation and natural lighting, the airport aims to enhance passenger comfort and streamline the travel experience. Utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced methodologies, the layout is crafted to optimize passenger flow and operational efficiency from check-in to security.
Inspired by Dubaiโs cultural heritage, the design harmoniously blends traditional elements with contemporary materials and techniques, reflecting a respect for the past while looking toward the future. The airport is envisioned as a hub where travellers from around the world can connect, fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment.
