The Techo International Airport in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, has been listed among 11 architectural projects set to shape the world in 2025, according to Cable News Network (CNN). The airport is part of Cambodia’s ambitious bid to boost tourism and become a regional aviation hub.
Replacing the existing international airport in Phnom Penh, the new Techo International Airport will have an initial capacity of 13 million annual passengers, eventually rising to 30 million. The terminal building, located 12 miles south of the city centre, will be one of Southeast Asia’s largest. Architects Foster + Partners designed the terminal, inspired by traditional Cambodian design, with a structural timber “tree” support system and a gridded steel shell filtering daylight.
The airport will also feature an onsite solar farm, making it one of the world’s greenest airports. The project is a public-private partnership between Overseas Cambodia Investment Corporation (OCIC) and the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation. The airport is being built over 2,600 hectares of land, with three phases of construction planned: Phase 1 from 2020 to 2030, Phase 2 from 2030 to 2050, and Phase 3 from 2050 onwards.
Other notable architectural projects set to shape the world in 2025 include the New Sydney Fish Market in Sydney, Australia; the Grand Ring in Osaka, Japan; the Life and Mind Building in Oxford, UK; and the Danjiang Bridge in Taipei, Taiwan.
