Aria Property Group and Koichi Takada Architects have resubmitted their Urban Forest project in South Brisbane for development approval. The revised 30-storey design takes advantage of the Temporary Local Planning Instrument, which relaxes building height and carparking limitations. The project aims to set a new standard for environmental sustainability in Australia.
The Urban Forest features 827 trees, 27,000 plants, and a public park under the building, spanning 1,350 square meters. The design incorporates oversized balconies, cross-ventilation, and a privately-managed information center. According to Koichi Takada, “We want to inspire a competitive shift from the tallest buildings to the greenest.”
Aria development director Michael Hurley emphasized the project’s significance, saying, “As we lead towards the 2032 Olympics, Brisbane should embrace green and sustainable towers, putting our city on an international standing.” The project seeks to exceed Brisbane City Council’s Buildings that Breathe guidelines and establish Brisbane as a global leader in green buildings.
