Gensler, in partnership with El Qalaa El Hamraa and Buro Happold, has developed a groundbreaking design for Al-Ahly Football Club’s new stadium in Cairo, Egypt. The 42,000-seat stadium promises to redefine the fan experience, drive economic growth, and set a new benchmark in sports architecture globally.
As one of the most successful football clubs in Africa and the Middle East, Al-Ahly has been waiting for three decades to have a stadium of its own. The new design marks a transformative opportunity for the club to create a home that captures the passion of its fans.
Located along the motorway connecting Cairo and Alexandria, the stadium serves as a gateway to Egypt’s bustling capital. Its distinctive architectural feature is a massive structural arch, making it instantly recognizable from all viewpoints.
The design incorporates several innovative solutions, including a sunken pitch and asymmetric bowl, which address height restrictions imposed by nearby flight paths. This design creates a dynamic match-day atmosphere while leveraging cooler earth temperatures to reduce ambient heat, achieving sustainability through passive design measures.
A digital façade with options for digital projections transforms the stadium into an iconic landmark, illuminating Cairo’s skyline at night. The design also includes a variety of experiences for Al-Ahly fans, such as the vibrant “Owners’ Plaza,” which features social areas, a team shop, cafes, and the Al-Ahly Museum.
Inside, double-tiered stands amplify the energy of supporters, ensuring most fans are close to the action. Premium areas, like The Field VIP, offer an exclusive atmosphere with gourmet dining, access to the players’ tunnel, and prime seating.
The Al-Ahly Stadium will anchor a transformative sports city masterplan, which includes a university, hospital, and mosque, enhancing Giza’s and Cairo’s tourism portfolio. With multifunctional spaces that can host national events and concerts, the stadium aims to become a dynamic, year-round venue that transcends football and drives significant economic growth in the region.
