The Architects’ Journal (AJ) recently launched the 30th edition of AJ Small Projects, celebrating outstanding architecture on modest budgets. The annual awards recognize schemes with contract values of ยฃ399,000 or less, encompassing home extensions, workspaces, pavilions, and small houses. Since its inception in 1995, AJ Small Projects has honored innovative, budget-friendly designs.
This year’s competition follows the success of Hayatsu Architects and Grizedale Arts’ 2024 win for The Farmer’s Arms Cold Food Store. The jury praised the project’s cultural exchange and community engagement. Other notable winners included Artefact’s Triangle House, Topo Architects’ The NewBridge Project, and Commonbond Architects’ Gardenhide Studio. To mark the 30th anniversary, entrants will receive a 40% discount on AJ subscriptions.
Eligible projects must have been completed between July 2023 and January 2025, with a budget of ยฃ399,000 or less. All entries will feature in the AJ Buildings Library, and shortlisted projects will be published in a special AJ Small Projects issue in April. A celebratory event and exhibition in May will announce the 2025 winner. Judges seek projects demonstrating big ideas, sustainability, and architectural ambition, with attention to detail and material use.
