A new architecture practice, Autarchy, has been launched in the UK, run entirely by artificial intelligence (AI). The practice, backed by an unnamed UK-based tech investor, aims to provide innovative, responsive, and tailored architectural services.
Autarchy’s AI engine has been trained on a vast dataset, including existing architectural schemes, planning submissions from over 350 local authorities, university curricula, and video recordings of four years of Architects Registration Board (ARB) prescription exams. The practice offers a range of tools, including a built-in banking app, quantity surveying tool, dynamic carbon calculator, and material passport app.
Autarchy has already been trialled on a successful project in Berkshire, where it worked on a private commission across all Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) stages. Local planning officers praised Autarchy for its “politeness, patience and rigour” and lack of “archi-speak”. The only human intervention required was to physically take a site surveillance drone to the construction site.
According to Flyvende Gris, the practice’s backer plans to extend Autarchy’s remit, enabling it to become its own client, using AI-supported crypto funds to finance schemes.
