The International Union of Architects (UIA) has announced the theme for World Architecture Day 2024, which will be observed on the first Monday of October, coinciding with the United Nations’ World Habitat Day.
World Architecture Day, celebrated in conjunction with World Habitat Day, focuses on the global efforts in urban development coordinated by the architectural community.
The 2024 theme, “Empowering the Next Generation in Participatory Urban Design,” underscores the vital role young architects play in shaping urban planning and development. The UIA encourages emerging architects to engage in participatory design processes, bringing fresh perspectives essential for sustainable urban growth.
This year’s emphasis is on fostering resilient urban economies through innovative and sustainable practices. Key areas of focus include the use of sustainable materials, waste management, energy efficiency, and promoting sustainable mobility.
The aim is to create resource-efficient, environmentally friendly cities. Young architects are also urged to support the development and maintenance of public spaces, involve communities in the design process, and enhance citizen participation in decision-making.
According to the UIA, young architects play a key role to play in shaping resilient and sustainable urban environments, advocating for social justice and sustainable practices, engaging in urban planning processes, promoting adaptive reuse and revitalisation of existing structures, incorporating circular economy principles and sustainable construction practices.
“Their active participation is essential for building cities that prioritise the well-being of residents and the planet, ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come,” said the UIA in its announcement.
“The celebration of World Architecture Day 2024 will showcase successful youth-led projects that have transformed communities and improved urban living conditions, highlighting the importance of participatory urban design.” “By involving young minds, cities can harness innovative ideas for sustainable and resilient urban environments,” it added.
World Architecture Day was created by the UIA in 1985, intended “to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the future of the human habitat.โ (Pic Courtesy: UIA)
