Barrie-based Salter Pilon Architecture Inc. has secured the contract for architectural services for the initial phase of Greater Sudbury’s $164.4-million emergency services revitalization project. This phase has a budget of $65.5 million and encompasses five emergency services stations.
New stations will be built in:
– Minnow Lake ($9.2 million)
– Garson ($11.8 million)
Extensive renovations will occur at:
– Val Therese ($17.3 million)
– Long Lake ($10.8 million)
– Van Horne ($16.2 million)
However, Van Horne’s renovation might become a new build due to site challenges, according to Fire and Paramedic Services Chief Joseph Nicholls. Two alternative sites west of Paris Street, south of Elm Street, and east of the railway tracks will be reviewed.
Salter Pilon Architecture Inc. has 62 years of experience designing public spaces, including fire and emergency services headquarters. Notable projects include the Brampton Fire and Emergency Services Headquarters and Training Centre.
City project manager Jason Radley has been assigned to the project, with site selection and schematic design development underway. Salter Pilon representatives will visit Greater Sudbury to assess existing and potential sites.
The project timeline includes:
– Detailed design development by June 2025
– Tender for general contractors by June 2025
– Completion of Minnow Lake and Garson stations by December 2026
– Completion of Val Therese, Long Lake, and Van Horne stations by December 2028
The project’s second phase, slated for the 2028 capital budget, will involve nine additional sites, including seven renovations and two new builds.
