The Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru – Terminal 2 in India was awarded Best in Competition in the 2024 AIANY ( American Institute of Architects, New York) + ASLA-NY( American Society of Landscape Architecture, New York) Transportation + Infrastructure Design Excellence Awards.
The terminal, designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and Grant Associates, integrates extensive greenery and natural elements to reflect Bengaluru’s garden city heritage. The project features a 123,000-square-meter transit hub, increases annual passenger capacity to 50 million, and emphasizes sustainability with LEED Platinum certification. The terminal’s design includes lush landscapes, renewable energy systems, and efficient, adaptable structural engineering to enhance both environmental performance and passenger experience.
The terminal was one of 10 winning projects, selected from 37 entries, that showcase innovations in transportation and infrastructure by architects, landscape architects, planners, and students.
The entries were judged in five categories: Open Space, Planning, Projects, Structures, and Student Work. Each submission was evaluated on its sustainability, community engagement, and civic architecture. The awards were categorized into Honors for the highest achievement, Merits for distinguished work, and Citations for exemplary aspects of specific projects.
