IKEA has recently launched Hemkomst, Middagsmat and Husknut, new products in the cookware range with a ceramic non-stick coating called Sol-gel. This move is a reflection of IKEAโs ongoing efforts to phase out the use of PFAS in products – a large group of chemicals that are persistent and do not degrade during use and when spread in the environment.
PFAS is a vast group of substances that can have multiple functions and is sometimes contained in products with complex supply chains. IKEA has been working on phasing out PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in the supply chain since 2009 to ensure that IKEA products are safe and that they are produced with care for indoor and outdoor environments. Our work regarding chemicals is aimed at avoiding harmful effects throughout the lifecycle of every IKEA product.
โAt IKEA, we want to create a better everyday life for the many people โ and we believe a safer life is a better life. That led us to explore new types of non-stick coating in our cookware range,โ says Jonatan Elofsson, Range Area Manager Cooking & Eating, IKEA of Sweden AB.
Hemkomst, Middagsmat and Husknut will offer customers a wide variety of pans and pots with ceramic non-stick coating consisting mostly of silica and is created by applying a gel-like solution to the product and drying it in an oven to a hard, glossy surface with non-stick properties. The coating is notable for its durability and non-stick properties, offering an alternative to traditional non-stick coatings such as PTFE.
โThe new range is just the beginning of our journey in phasing out PTFE in cookware and bakeware. By 2026, all our cookware and bakeware will be non-PTFE,โ says Jonatan Elofsson.
The Hemkomst, Middagsmat and Husknut, range with the new ceramic coating was available from April 2024.
