Unnat Jyoti Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA) scheme of the central government implemented by the Chandigarh administration is turning out to be a power-saver.
Under the scheme, which was launched on March 6 by local MP Kirron Kher, consumers can buy 4 LED bulbs (9watt), 2 LED tubes (20watt) and 1fan (50watt) at 23 sampark centres.
A total of 2.20 lakh bulbs, 32,385 tubelights and 11,213 fans have been distributed among the consumers at subsidised rates till June 17.
As many as 2.20 lakh LED bulbs will help the power department in saving 28,624 MWh of energy every year. It will also bring down the power purchase cost by Rs 11 crore and 6 MW of peak power demand.
With 32,385 consumers opting for LED tubelights, the electricity department is expected to save 14,18,463 kWh per year. It will also help the department save INR 48.22 lakh per year. Meanwhile, with 11,213 fans the department is saving 4,345 kWh of power every day and cost of INR 14,773 per day.
The price of LED bulb is Rs 70 against the market price of around INR 150, while one tubelight costs INR 230. Market price of 20watt LED tubelight is around Rs 800. A fan costs INR 1,150 against the market price of around INR 1,800.
UT superintending engineer M P Singh said with consumers starting to use LED bulbstubelights and power efficient fans, significant amount of energy is being saved per day and has brought down the power purchase cost by INR 3 lakh per day.
As per official records, there are as many as 2.15 lakh electricity consumers, of which, 1.75 lakh fall in the domestic category .
The average power demand of city during summer is around 350MW, while annual average power demand is around 250MW.
As per data of electricity department, city consumes around 1,800 million units (MU) on an average in a year and 9.94MU on a daily basis. “Once all consumers shift to LED lighting, it will also bring down power consumption,” said MP Singh.
