Hyderabad’s MJ Market adopted by IAS officer for restoration

One of Hyderabad‘s most known landmarks, the Mozzam Jahi Market, is all set for a new lease of life, courtesy senior IAS officer Arvind Kumar.

Kumar, currently Principal Secretary (Municipal Administration and Urban Development), announced on Twitter on Monday that based on the advice of MA&UD Minister KT Rama Rao, he was adopting MJ Market for its complete ‘heritage restoration’.

Setting himself a time frame of three to four months, Kumar has sought suggestions and participation of Hyderabadis in the effort.

Kumar has created an email id for those to be part of the endeavour, asking them to write to mjmarket.restoration@gmail.com and describe how they wanted to be part of ‘Team MJ Market Restoration’.

The move has elicited quite an impressive response in just a few hours, with Minister KT Rama Rao himself re-tweeting Kumar’s announcement, saying he was saving the current pictures of the market so that he could juxtapose them with the images after restoration.

Kumar, replying to some suggestions, has said that the stone structures would be restored to their original colour, without artificial colours or paints. The century-old water taps too would be restored.

He also agreed to suggestions to get in touch with the Aga Khan Foundation who were working on the restoration of the Qutub Shahi Tombs for advice.

He added that issues like water leakage and erection of banners and cables, that reportedly deprived the market of its beauty, were being attended to. Local public were also being involved in the effort, he said.
