Days after the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) began collecting fines from citizens for removal of construction waste, the city congress criticized the move.
Congress councillor Ami Ravat even demanded that the civic body refund Rs 8.69 lakh collected from 85 citizens under the Construction and Demolition Waste Management Rules 2016.
“The civic body has collected charges and fines from people for disposing of construction waste but has it made any arrangements for such waste to be properly disposed of? If people want to dispose of debris, who should they suppose call? Has the VMC started any such helpline?,” Ravat asked.
“People cannot dispose of construction waste anywhere. Has VMC made collection bins for such waste available, or does VMC have an official site to dispose of debris? VMC doesn’t have a facility for processing or reusing construction waste. Before fining people, the VMC must come clear on its own preparations,” Ravat added.
She went to say that the VMC itself disposes of construction waste near water bodies, including lakes and the Vishwamitri river.
“VMC has no right to collect fines until it is prepared to implement all the rules,” Ravat said.
