In what could make environmentalists despair further over the BMC’s Coastal Road plans, the civic administration is considering removing 377 trees from Marine Drive and Worli for the project. Thus, besides Breach Candy’s Tata Garden, which stands to lose a part of its area and scores of trees to one of the project’s interchanges, the municipal corporation now plans to appropriate Gautam Budha Udyaan, the public garden at Worli Seaface, to create two additional lanes for the proposed coastal freeway.
Earlier in the month, activist Zoru Bhathena filed an RTI query with the civic body, seeking details of tree-removal proposals submitted to its garden department.
