The project will be conducted in line with UPC’s strategy to re-plan existing areas in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
Once completed, the redevelopment project will provide residential areas for UAE nationals, and will include a network of community facilities such as schools, health facilities, commercial spaces, parks, entertainment facilities, pedestrian paths, cycle lanes and mosques. A university, a gas station and police & civil defense facilities will also be developed as part of the project.
Commenting on the redevelopment project, Abdulla Al Sahi, executive director of UPC’s Planning and Infrastructure Sector, said: “Al Shamkha and Al Shawamekh perfectly align with the objectives of our ‘Complete Sustainable Communities’ initiative to create attractive, walkable communities that provide all of the facilities people need within easy reach.
The master plan for both projects was guided by the council’s manuals and guidelines, including the Abu Dhabi Community Facility Planning Standards and the Abu Dhabi Public Realm Design Manual.
Infrastructure works in Al Shamkha and Al Shawamekh are scheduled to commence in Q2 2016. These works are expected to take 18 months to complete.
