What pre-requisites should be followed before waterproofing a structure? How effectively can that be done (roof-top landscape amenities and external façade)?
The reliability of construction depends on the civil engineering techniques adopted, technologies used, and most importantly the materials that go into the construction. To have long lasting structures, the best quality construction materials and performance enhancing additives should be used. Since construction materials include cement, aggregate, concrete, reinforced steel, bricks, tiles and various types of composites, the quality of each material should be assessed in an accepted laboratory, using standard test methods. Using specific additives in the construction material improves the integral waterproofing properties of cement, concrete and plasters after curing. It helps prevent cracks, rusting and leakages. Hence it would also prevent construction decay and keep the structure stronger for a longer period.
The right waterproofing compound should have the built-in capacity to neutralize the excess salt and clay if present in the sand used for construction. As cement is basically water-based, the product that is used for waterproofing work should also be cement and water-based. No waxy material which is freely available these days in the market should be used, whether they are coloured or colourless. They form a coating on the surface and cannot last for more than one season. They start cracking up during summer season leading to more leakage during monsoon. It should not be assumed that cracks alone cause leakage and then go look for crack filling products. Water can seep through wall plaster even if there are no cracks. This is because the wall plasters made out of sub-standard sand & cement virtually behave like blotting papers absorbing water and pushing it right through the walls. Hence, crack filling alone gives only a partial & temporary relief. A product that is cement and water-based, withstands weathering, not only fills cracks but also plugs micro-holes in the cement structure. It is also capable of virtually rejuvenating the defective structure.
Explain about Crystalline waterproofing of concrete.
Crystalline Waterproofing is composed of high quality cement, properly selected & graded inert aggregates, proprietary waterproofing active chemicals & additives. It is used as a chemically active waterproofing treatment for concrete. When mixed with water and applied as a brush coat to concrete, it penetrates deeply into the capillaries of the concrete & protects it against the permeability of water. It can also be dry Shaken or Broadcasted before concreting or on green concrete..

He furthered his career in Aeons Construction Products Ltd as a Promoter & Managing Director in 1989 & headed Unitech Prefab Ltd from 1993 as their Managing Director. He joined Pidilite Industries Ltd. in 2003 as a CEO. In 2007 he went on to head ACC Concrete Ltd as their Managing Director till 2008, post which he was a practicing management consultant. He joined Pidilite Industries Ltd. in October 2010 as the Global CEO, Construction Chemicals, Pidilite Industries.
